Gatlinburg 2016

This past weekend I took a quick 3 day trip to Gatlinburg with my family. It was a very relaxing vacation full of shopping, eating, and hiking.

I stayed in the Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort, and it was absolutely beautiful. The resort itself has a water park, pool, restaurants, fitness center, and spa as well as other great amenities.  I definitely recommend this resort if you are looking to spend some time in Gatlinburg.

With so many restaurants in Gatlinburg it can be somewhat overwhelming to find a place to eat. And out of all of the places I ate three stood out to me, The Donut Friar, Mad Dog’s Creamery and Donuts , and  Crockett’s Breakfast Camp.

The Donut Friar is a tiny donut shop nestled in the inner workings of The Village settled in downtown Gatlinburg. When you walk past the shop you get hit with the intoxicatingly, sweet smell of sugar, which makes it very difficult not to stop by. They have many options to choose from, but I opted to get the Friar’s Special. The Friar’s Special is a plain donut stuffed with mouth-watering cream and coated with a generous amount of chocolate frosting and topped with an adorable smiley face, almost  too cute to eat.

Mad Dog’s Creamery and Donut shop is not your typical side of the road shop. With fantastic decorations on the outside, it is almost impossible not to stop and take to some Instagram. Not only are the decorations picture-worthy, but the food is somehow captures the light better than any regular donut and ice cream, maybe because it tastes so darn good.

If you only go to one restaurant in Gatlinburg, this is the restaurant you need to go to. Crockett’s Breakfast Camp is, in my opinion, the best breakfast place in all of Gatlinburg and there are a lot of breakfast restaurants. The friendly atmosphere and ambience of the restaurant transports  you to old Tennessee . And the food is absolutely amazing.

You cannot go to Gatlinburg without visiting downtown Gatlinburg. One of my favorite spots downtown is The Village. The Village is a small network of a about two dozen shops with a touch of European charm.

Going hiking in Gatlinburg is not just recommended, it is insisted. I mean you are right next to one of the most beautiful National Parks in the nation, the Smokies are only minutes away waiting to be discovered. I went to one hiking place in the Smokies, Cascade Falls, a very beautiful, very simple hike, perfect for families.

My trip to Gatlinburg was absolutely unforgettable. It was a perfect weekend trip full of family fun and great memories. A trip to the Smokies and Eastern Tennessee should be on your bucket list.

  1. Yes it should! You are correct about those breakfast food choices, but I haven’t tried Mad Dog’s yet. The Donut Friar has the best cake donuts I have ever tasted. That’s what convinced me.
